Greenwich Village was once the home of the bohemian lifestyle back in the sixties. Unfortunately, the rising cost of living ended the era of cool hip artists living in the area. They have moved on to Soho and then on to the TriBeCa, part of lower Manhattan. Now one would have to make it to Williamsburg and Bushwick to get a glimpse of what is left over of the bohemian life. Greenwich Village is still filled with lots of charm and creativity and the people who live there are very proud of their neighborhood. There are many celebrities who live there such as Liv Tyler, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anderson Cooper. There are plenty of fashion and media biggies that live there as well.
One of the reasons it was such a bohemian area was because of the schools that were nearby. New York University has its primary campus in Greenwich Village. The Parsons The New School for Design which is a division of The New School. The Pratt Institute is also in the neighborhood and Cooper Union as well as some others.
At the heart of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park as well as a few other smaller parks. There is also The Cage which is a popular tournament site for street basketball. The village is also the home of the Off Broadway scene featuring theater's like the Astor Place Theater and clubs like The Blue Note host some amazing jazz performers regularly. Then there are also some other music clubs like The Bitter End, The Gaslight Cafe, Lion's Den, Cafe Au Go Go and Cafe Wha?. Comedy can also be found in the area at the Comedy Cellar which happens to be where some of the big named Comedians of modern times got their start.
To walk around the area is really wonderful. The Greenwich Village Historic District has done a great job in preserving many of the buildings and parks. There is always a threat to the historic buildings as companies try to expand their size around them. As visitors spend time in the Village they might see some buildings that look familiar. The building front used as Carrie Bradshaw's apartment from the show Sex in the City is located on Perry Street. There was a lot of scenes from the Real World: Back to New York that were filmed in the Village. And for Bob Dylan fans, his album cover for The Freewheelin Bob Dylan was taken in the Village on Jones Street which is were he lived at the time.
