One of the best ways to spend an afternoon in New York is to explore all of the various and dynamic offerings and attractions that can be found in Central Park. This is actually one of many parks in the city, though it is definitely the most famous and probably the most cherished parks on the part of the city's residents. There is always something to do and see in Central Park, and most of the residents are happy to enjoy an hour of simply laying in the grass. It also offers many of them the perfect opportunity for their morning or evening exercise and the park is frequently full of people running, jogging and performing yoga and or tai chi poses.
Meanwhile, if you head to the park for reasons other than to lie in the grass, although it is highly recommended, there are a great number of things to do and see and this part of the city alone can take up an entire afternoon of outings. And if on the extremely unlikely chance that this still doesn't do it for you, there is always the Metropolitan Art Museum, which is just across the street from the park and is also one of the finest ways you can spend an afternoon. However, the city is full of great art and sculptures and while Central Park is full of incredible sculptures, among other things, they are also in parks across the city.
Many of the sculptures in Central Park are historically based and display important figures from military as well as specific cultural based history. The 107th United States Infantry monument depicts seven soldiers who served in the First World War. Another war monument sculpture is the 7th Regiment Memorial. It honors the 58 men of the 7th Regiment in the Civil War and depicts a larger than life soldier resting with his rifle. Central Park may be the largest and most famous park in the city but it is not the only park with great sculptures and other works of art. Many of the parks in Manhattan have commissioned art by well known artists. And some of them feature ongoing installation series. The City Hall Park is known for its beauty and calm as well as having interesting sculptures placed strategically through its lawns. Battery Park in the southern end of Manhattan has additional war memorial sculpture monuments as well as one that honors the victims and losses of the World Trade Center bombings.
